Greetings Everyone
Welcome to another Wednesday featured forum, today we will be looking at the Hyper-V Forum. Firstly, what is Hyper-V?
Hypervisor technology is software on which multiple virtual machines can run, with the hypervisor layer controlling the hardware and allocating resources to each VM operating system. Hyper-V is the virtualization platform that is included in Windows Server 2008 and above. You also get a separate Hyper-V server - Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016.
As mentioned above, you can run virtual machines(depending on your operation system version) on top of physical server (Resource Dependent of course) without the need to have X number of physical servers in your data center. This is great for cost saving and also rack space. Back in the day, if you had a SQL cluster or Exchange DAG, all the servers were physical. These days you can virtualize pretty much almost any application which are supported by Microsoft.
Basically this also saves you on software and licensing costs which I wont go into much detail on but for example, if you bought a data center edition of SQL, you could license X number of cores on the physical host and run VM's with SQL on, take note this does not include CAL's for user access.
This also ties in with Azure, you can spin up virtual machines as you need to and as the hardware is hosted/managed by Microsoft you don't need to manage the infrastructure side of things, only your virtual machines.
Its not only the Server Editions that allow you to run Hyper-V, you can also run it on your desktop OS. So if you are a developer and need a legacy OS, Linux or MacOS to test with you can do so without having to spin up a server.
