Wednesday Featured Forums: OMS (Microsoft Operations Management Suite)

Greetings Everyone

Welcome to another Wednesday featured forum, today we will be looking at the OMS (Microsoft Operations Management Suite) Forums.

What is OMS? Operations Management Suite (also known as OMS) is a collection of management services that were designed in the cloud from the start. Rather than deploying and managing on-premise resources, OMS components are entirely hosted in Azure. (Information taken from MS Site)

Is OMS just for running stuff in the cloud? No, you can link you on-premise System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) by using an Agent to have information displayed in OMS.

OMS comes in different versions, you have the Free option where you are limited to 500MB of uploaded data per day, you also have the full OMS Suite which means you can upload unlimited data however you will be billed for every node.

What can you do with OMS you may ask. There are a whole lot of solutions in the gallery you can add but I will touch on a few:

  • Active Directory - Once you have added in this solution you see how your domain controllers are running, in terms of Replication etc.
  • SQL - Once you have this solution installed, OMS will advise you on what to "tweak" on the servers, for example, setting the amount of Ram to be used by SQL.
  • Security - You can have your security logs on your servers uploaded and view information about failed logins, information about worldwide IP's that try and access your servers in a malicious manner, etc.
  • Malware - This gives you an overview of servers that are patched with the likes of Windows Malicious removal tool or running SCEP or a custom AV.
  • Changes - You can track what changes have been made to a server.

Here is a snippet of what the portal looks like, your solutions might be different or the re-arrangement of the tiles:

Now that you have a brief overview let's move to the OMS Forums. To access the forums you can click on the link below:

While this forum is still growing, the questions asked here are by no means easy ones. Below is an example question asked regarding Anti-Virus other than SCEP that Microsoft provides:

If you would like to know more about OMS, you can see some of the example documents and tutorials provided by Microsoft:

These are just some of the many pages out there, you can open up Bing or Google, whichever is your favourite search engine and find the information.

That is all for now, good luck for those wanting to try out OMS or move to it.

All the Best!

Edward
